See all our photos from Kona.
We rented a really cool “buggy” for today. It was built on the chassis of a 1970 VW Bug.

We drove south on the scenic road about an hour, at times climbing to over 2000 feet above sea level until we turned down the hill to visit the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park which was a “City of Refuge” for the natives. It is also a highly religious site.

We then drove north along the coastal road, yet another one lane road, about 5 miles to a black sand beach and bay with a Captain Cook monument. The water was wild.

Before heading back, we stopped at the “Painted Church”. A very cool, wooden church with all the interior walls painted in religious scenes.

We drove about an hour back to Kona, turned in the buggy and had a nice lunch at the Kona Brewing Company.

We now have 5 more sea days going south to French Polynesia. We will cross the Equator before we get there.
