Day 50 Feb 24 Picton, New Zealand

See our Picton photo gallery for all of the pictures.

Today we took a four hour wildlife boat tour in the Queen Charlotte Sound from Picton. We rode aways down the sound and found a pod of Hector’s Dolphins, one of the rarest species in the world with a population of only about 35 and found only here. They don’t jump very high and they are not very big so they were hard to get a good picture.

We saw lots of different birds.

We were fortunate that the King Shag Cormorant colony was home. There was also a seal basking on the rocks.

An unexpected surprise was finding two blue penguins floating in the sea. Blue penguins are the smallest penguins in the world.

We stopped for an hour on an island that is a bird sanctuary and spotted a few more birds before heading back to Picton and the ship.
