Day 65 Mar 11, Rottnest Island and Freemantle Australia

Please see all of our Rottnest Island and Freemantle Australia photos.

Our plan was to just wander around Freemantle today, but the night before we arrived, we found out about a unique animal called the Quokka that is very rare and mostly found on Rottnest Island just offshore of Freemantle. We teamed up with Chance Devlin, who is the piano player in the evenings at the Crooners Bar and lots of fun, to take the ferry across to the island and explore for the day.

The quokka is a small, herbivorous marsupial, roughly the size of a cat, found primarily on Rottnest Island and in southwest Western Australia. Famous as the “world’s happiest animal” for its friendly, smiling expression, this nocturnal, social creature is actually a type of small wallaby, not a rodent. There are about 8,000 – 12,000 on this small island and can be found everywhere, even during the day.

The island was quite beautiful as well.

We could even see the Perth skyline

Karen seems to be having fun!

Chance sent some picture he took.

We had 230 ferry tickets to return and after a 30 minute ride, we were back in Freemantle and spent about 45 minutes walking through the old town.

We made it back on board on time and saw the pilot boat come alongside as we cleared the breakwater as we captured one last Perth skyline picture.

We have 3 sea days before we get to Bali Indonesia and our next adventure.
