We started our day driving through Georgetown and up to the Kek Lok Si Temple with our private guide JooBees. As we drove around, she was pointing out lots of historical sites. We made a quick stop at the house where they were playing Mahjong in the movie Crazy Rich Asians.
We then arrived at the magnficant Kek Lok Si Temple which is on 3 levels. We didn’t have to climb, we drove from one level to the next and so glad because it was getting very hot.
At the first level, we took some pictures of the temple from below and fed the turtles in a pond.
The second level had the main temple hall where we put our wishes on a wishing tree. There are over 10,000 small buddhas all over this site.
The third level had the giant statue.
There was also a nice area with the Chinese Zodiac calendar animals. We found ours, Dragon for Karen and Goat for Ken.
We drove back down the hill and visited 2 Thai temple and one Burmese temple. The first temple was small but very nice.The second Thai temple has a huge gilded reclining Buddha as well as lots of Buddha statues in poses for each zodiac year. We once again found ours.
Right across the street was the Burmese Temple. Ken bought a set of robes, shoes, etc. to support the monks and received a blessing for his gift.
Now it was time for a wonderful lunch. As you know, we don’t take pictures of our food but we did grab a few of the drinks.
After lunch, we visited a Clan House. The Penang Clans have a long and complex history. The compound was very nice.
We then spent a some time driving around different neighborhoods and seeing lots of really interesting street art. Some of it is 3D where they have a painting behind a physical object.
Our next stop was one of the Clan Jetties, again, a long and complex history. We visited the Chew Jetty.
Our final stop was the Town Hall and City Hall. JooBee drove back to the ship and we concluded one of our best days of the cruise.
We have 1 sea day before we get to Singapore and our next adventure.
