Today we scheduled a tour with Greenway Tours. We will be taking a 60 minute “Jungle Cruise” on the Tarcoles River famous for its large American Crocodiles. Besides crocodiles, we saw tons of aquatic birds. But first, we had to trek down a long, long pier to find our guide and driver. There were a total of 10 people on this tour so it was “semi-private”. The drive was about 1 hour and 20 minutes from the cruise terminal to the river where we loaded into long flat boats to see nature.

We saw lots of crocodiles

As we boated closer to the mouth of the river and the Pacific Ocean, the birds were quite impressive.

As we started to drive to our next destination, the driver spotted some howler monkeys and we pulled off to take pictures.

Our next stop was to try to find some wild macaws. We were lucky and found one in a tree hollow along with a pretty large iguana in another tree.

Our final destination was thh Villa Lapas Sky Way walking tour which is 1.5 miles including 3 suspended bridges at more than 180 feet above the ground. Each of these bridges is an astonishing 300 feet length, crossing through the very heart of the tropical rainforest allowing us to observe the primary and secondary rainforest vegetation.

We only saw one bird along the walk as it was the middle of the day and very hot. But we also so a termite “mound” up in a tree where they build them instead of the ground to ensure they don’t flood during rainy season.

On the return the ship, we stopped at a restaurant and souvenir store where sampled Costa Rican empanadas and bought a Christmas ornament.
